Happy Thanksgiving

This blog gets people from all over the world visiting and we are so happy about that. On my other blogs today was all about Thanksgiving. You can check them out here and here. I thought it would be a good time to share and American tradition here with all of you.

I know that this is a holiday special to us here in the USA because it is all about our beginnings. This day is celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday of the November. This is a day to commemorate the fist colonies making their way over here from England and "setting up shop". It also commemorates the way that the Indians (Native Americans) actually showed these "foreigners" how to live off the land. They showed them how to farm and grow crops.

Because of this help, they were able to survive their first winter. In thanks, they invited the natives to dine with them.

Yes, study of history has proven that it wasn't as pretty of a picture as all that; but the root of this holiday is constant. People sharing what they have with each other. Communities coming together to help each other out. The attitude of "I'll share with you and we can come together" is one that, to me, is just awesome. It's great that we still do this hundreds of years later.

Families come together; people open their homes to others who may not have a place to go. There is one tradition that I hope to pick up once we have a place big enough. Around here we can invite those who serve in our military to share Thanksgiving in our home. I think that is awesome. These men and women volunteer to serve our country and protect it. The spend months at a time away from their families; selflessly giving to so many. The very least I could do is share a meal with them on this one day a year.

What are some of your countries traditions?
