I, too, play the piano! I mostly love playing Jazz and Baroque period pieces. This is a picture of one of our military aircraft carriers. Hope you enjoy it!
Jennifer and Robert
.....

Did I mention she said she is a pianist? That's why I included that second sentence. I have played the piano since I was 7 years old. I don't have a piano of my own right now (we would never fit it into this small apartment); but I do dream of the day that I get to have my very own in my house again. I miss being able to just sit down and play any time I like.

Do you have a hobby like that?

Jennihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09315829092172760748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-222606987858040103.post-62415316600167031882009-04-09T03:00:00.000-07:002009-04-09T14:28:46.994-07:00Number 79 Arrived (377012)It only took 10 days to get this card to JAPAN. This card is of our Balboa Park. This is a very picturesque place to visit. If you ever visit San Diego, you must go here!
Robert and Jennifer Ryan
.....

Balboa Park, if you haven't been there, is a great location for anyone to visit (tourists and locals). There is so much to do. When I was a nanny, I used to take the little girl there every Saturday. I am usually so very careful about doing this, but I got a message from postcrossing telling me I had forgotten and then this message from the receiver:

Hello to you both! She wants to see those touristy things, so I thought this was a perfect card:
Isn't that beautiful? Seriously! I think this is one of my favorite postcards that we've sent. This is the message:

Hello from San Diego, California. The hotel in lights on this card is 120 years old and has become an iconic symbol of San Diego. It has a great history and is so very beautiful. We are documenting our postcrossing experiences here:
.....
Stop by and say hi! Hope you enjoy this card.
Robert and Jennifer
________________________

This is another card I picked up while walking around Seaport Village today. I have found a new place to pick up cards, it seems. I found so many great cards of San Diego today. I'm sure there are more places I can find cards. I think I am going to have to make that my mission anymore: find great places to find great cards instead of at the boring drug store.

Also, notice I said that this is AN iconic symbol here in San Diego; I didn't say THE iconic symbol. I don't know that there is any one things that is the iconic symbol of San Diego. There are so many great sites and so much diverse places, I don't think there could be one iconic symbol.

What do you think of when you think of San Diego?

Jennihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09315829092172760748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-222606987858040103.post-61583815611518623142009-03-27T20:38:00.000-07:002009-03-27T20:50:14.997-07:00Sending Number 79 (376054)I never in my life thought I would be buying a postcard with Elvis Presley on it, no less sending it around the world to the UNITED KINGDOM. However, I put in a request for a few addresses this morning before going out for the day and on of the receivers said she would like cards with Elvis on them...okay, she asked for some other things as well, but when I was walking around Seaport Village today and walked in a store and saw these postcards, I knew that was the card I would be sending.
They had other choices of Elvis, but this was my favorite one. I do hope she enjoys it. What do you think?

I am sending it with this message:

Hello from San Diego, California. I hope you don't have this card of Elvis Presley yet. It was my favorite that I found of him. We also love Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, hope all is going well for you. We are documenting our postcrossing experiences at:
.....
Stop by and say hi!
Robert and Jennifer
___________________________________

I added that part about Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings because those were other card requests she had...and we do both love those books and movies. Actually, I love Harry Potter; the husband loves Lord of the Rings.

He loves Lord of the Rings so much that when we got married, I actually bought him a Lord of the Rings replica ring for his wedding band. It was VERY expensive; I only found his size at three different places on line and at NO stores, hobby, collectors or otherwise; and it was worth every penny and all the time it took me to find it just to see the look on his face when I gave it to him. (Oh, I spent literally MONTHS searching for this ring in his size; I almost gave up, but I just couldn't, I knew he wanted it so bad).

So, he loves Lord of the Rings; I love Harry Potter. I have literally lost count as to how many times I have read every book. I lost count after 5 and the pages in my copies are literally falling out I've read them so many times. I also enjoy the movies as well and can't wait for the rest of them to come out.

Jennihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09315829092172760748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-222606987858040103.post-40477629689334702322009-03-27T20:26:00.000-07:002009-03-27T20:37:56.119-07:00Sending Number 76 (376050)This card is going to a person in FINLAND who had a specific request to NOT get "boring" landscape cards. Oh, she said it in a nice way, so I wasn't offended. She also gave a list of special wishes for cards. One of the things she requested was "The little polar bear"; I didn't know about this until I searched for it and found out it was a cartoon. Well, I didn't have anything to fit that, but I did have this:
Since I spend some time at the San Diego Zoo yesterday, I thought this would be a great card to send, don't you think? Sure, it's not a cartoon; but who would want a cartoon when you can have the real thing? Plus, how can you not love that little frolicking step?

This is the message we are sending:

Hello from San Diego, California. This isn't "The little Polar bear" but it's the real thing. Hope you like it. This is from the world famous San Diego Zoo. They really do a lot there to make the world better for animals. We are lucky to be so close to visit often.
Robert and Jennifer
___________________________

The San Diego Zoo is world famous for many reasons, mostly their research efforts. I have an employee who is very much into animal rights and all that jazz; when she found out we were going on a field trip to the zoo she was very upset. She didn't want to go to a place that treated animals this way and just put them on display.

After going to the show they did for the school children, she turned around her attitude. They made her realize that what they do isn't just putting animals on display. There's research and repopulation of endangered animals going on all around the zoo and the animal park; as well as putting these animals out so millions of people can see them actually helps the animals in the wild. When you see what's out there, you care more for it. If we didn't have zoos, people wouldn't be aware of some of those animals and, as a result, wouldn't care about those animals and wouldn't think of the effect their actions would have on them.

We're going back again this year and we haven't heard a single complaint from her. Oh, she's still all about the animal rights; but she has seen the good things that these places do to help these animals and what a great asset they are to nature.

Jennihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09315829092172760748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-222606987858040103.post-40372066928138516722009-03-27T20:20:00.000-07:002009-03-27T20:25:54.281-07:00Number 57 Received (si12274)This is kind of a grainy picture for a postcard, but I still like it:
This looks like a real sample of daily life in Slovenia. It made a huge jump, no? Well, yes and no. See, I was going insane trying to remember which number and second guessing myself; so I decided that I am going to use the TOTAL number received rather than the number received this year.

I actually think it's better this way anyway. It's kind of amazing to think that we have received 55 cards already and we haven't been doing this for even a year yet. So, want to know what number 55 looks like? It's from NEW ZEALAND. (369681)The card we sent to JAPAN arrived in 7 days. We received this message from the receiver:

Hello,
Thanks for the nice card you sent for me. I loved it.

Have you noticed that I tend to update this blog with about 6 posts at a time. It's not because I don't want to update sooner; it's just that the rhythm of cards that I am in right now means that I get about 3 messages that a card has been received in one day. This means that I can request 3 cards on that same day. Which equals at least 6 posts in one day.

I have considered messing with the timing of cards sent a little bit by only sending one a day; but I must admit that there are some things that I have no patience for...and sending postcards seems to be one of those things. I just can't wait to get those postcards out the door and on their way. I mean, that's why I have a collection of cards to choose from on hand so that I can get the card in the box the same day I get the request.

Oh well, you will all just have to adjust to having an avalanche of posts in one short day with, what seems like, long periods of waiting in between.

Jennihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09315829092172760748noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-222606987858040103.post-71551028343486566672009-03-27T19:45:00.000-07:002009-03-27T19:50:08.234-07:00Number 24 Arrived (369679)The 24th card we sent this year went to FINLAND after an average 6 day travel. She likes Audrey Hepburn and Johnny Depp, in her word, "who doesn't?" A girl after my own heart. She also mentioned liking cards with artists, like Norman Rockwell.

Let me tell you, I LOVE Norman Rockwell. The love of this artist comes 100% from my father who has a great collection of his artwork. I grew up in a house surrounded my Norman Rockwell art: prints, plates, books, all sorts of things. That's probably why I like him so much; but I have a feeling that even if I hadn't been surrounded by his work, I would have still been drawn to it.

So, this is the message I am sending to her:
Hello from San Diego, California. This is our downtown area. You can see to the left the FlatHead buildings that are part of the buildings coined as "the tool box." We are very close to Hollywood here and I, too, love Audry Hepburn and Johnny Depp. I also noticed that you like Norman Rockwell. I grew up surrounded by his work as my dad is a huge fan (as am I). We have quite a collections of prints, plates, books, etc...of his work. It's amazing! Because many people don't know (or forget) that we here in San Diego actually live in a desert area. This the message:

Hello from San Diego, California. Many people know us for our beaches, but did you know we are also a desert? It's really a beautiful place with many landscapes (beach, mountain, desert)
Robert and Jennifer
.....

So, lesson to everyone, San Diego is desert area. We are headed into another (of many) droughts. No, we never get enough rain. Just adding that bit of trivia for any of you reading who doesn't know.

Jennihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09315829092172760748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-222606987858040103.post-41900035163166585322009-03-18T20:49:00.000-07:002009-03-18T20:53:10.134-07:00Sending Number 25 (369680)The next card is going to LITHUANIA to a 13 year old who wanted city views and maybe some jokes. I think I chose a great card:
I picked horrible jokes, but they are already written in ink, so I'm stuck:

Hello from San Diego, California in the USA! Here's a couple riddles:
What did the boy firefly say to the girl firefly? "I glow for you"
What is the best way to send a letter to the Easter Bunny? By hare (air) mail!
Robert and Jennifer

So, what do you think? Bad jokes, right? I should have asked all of you for your best jokes. I bet I would have done better. Oh well, live and learn.

Jennihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09315829092172760748noreply@blogger.com0
